Richard Cypher was once but a simple woods guide in his home town of Hartland. That all changed after meeting Kahlan Amnell and Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, who revealed to Richard he is the first true Seeker the world has known in a thousand years, destined to wield the powerful Sword of Truth and defeat the evil tyrant Darken Rahl. With the Confessor and the Wizard of the First Order beside him, Richard fulfilled that destiny, killing Rahl and giving freedom to everyone enslaved under his rule.
Now, Richard discovers that the greatest harm can sometimes come from the best intentions. The aftermath of destroying Rahl, Richard's greatest enemy as well as his brother, is devastating. A tear has formed in the veil separating the world of the living and the Underworld, the domain of the Keeper. Only the mythical Stone of Tears can seal the cracks that are forming all over the world, and prevent the Keeper from waging war on the living. Richard is told that he is to inherit Darken Rahl's throne and the leadership of all D'Hara. But he decides to put aside becoming Lord Rahl for now. The Seeker's new mission - to find the Stone and close the rift once and for all.
Kahlan is the Mother Confessor, leader of an ancient order of magical women. She has the power to make anyone she touches tell the truth, but whoever Kahlan "confesses" also loses their free will and is compelled to love and obey her for as long as they live. Kahlan risked everything to find Richard Cypher. What she didn't expect was to fall in love with him. But her powers keep them from ever being together. Despite their dilemma, Kahlan helped Richard defeat Darken Rahl, the tyrant who was so close to becoming ruler of the three territories.
Kahlan hopes very much that she and Richard can someday find a way to express their undying love for each other. But first, she faces a greater threat that threatens to destroy them all - the Keeper of the Underworld. Darken Rahl's defeat has opened a rift to this land of the dead, and the Keeper is preparing to wage war on the world of the living. Only the Stone of Tears can seal the Keeper and his evil minions in the nether region. Only the Seeker can find the Stone. And Kahlan's greatest duty as Mother Confessor is to protect the Seeker.
Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander
Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander is a wise and powerful Wizard of the First Order, protecting Richard from birth so that he could fulfill his destiny of becoming the first true Seeker in a thousand years, bringing down Darken Rahl's tyrannical rule of dark magic. And Zedd revealed that he is Richard's grandfather as well as the Seeker's protector. When the wizard helped Richard use the three magical Boxes of Orden to destroy Rahl, he thought their quest was finally over.
Now, a new mission begins. The power of Orden used to kill Darken Rahl has an unintended consequence - creating a tear in the veil between their world and the world of the dead. Zedd teaches Richard Wizard's Second Rule: "The greatest harm can come from the best intentions." And Zedd tells Richard that only the Stone of Tears can prevent the Keeper of the Underworld from waging war on the land of the living. But the Stone has been lost for centuries beyond count. To find it would be a miracle. But Zedd must help Richard achieve the impossible, or sit back and watch the Keeper kill every living thing.
She is one of the feared order of women known as Mord-Sith. When Mistress Denna failed to kill Richard Cypher, Cara was personally recruited by the evil ruler Darken Rahl to eliminate the Seeker once for all. But instead of fulfilling her mission, Cara was forced to work with Richard to save herself, which ultimately led to the Seeker fulfilling the prophecy, killing Rahl and ending his reign of tyranny.
From the Underworld, Darken Rahl commands the Mord'Sith to dispose of Cara for her role in his demise. They beat her and leave her for dead, after which Richard helps Cara. Deserted by her people and sworn to protect Richard, heir to the title Lord Rahl, Cara joins the Seeker and a wary Kahlan and Zedd on their new quest. Richard trusts Cara, and believes her unique abilities could prove invaluable in finding the Stone of Tears and defeating the Keeper of the Underworld.
This is the embodiment of pure evil, in the face and golden form of a handsome young man. Darken Rahl wanted nothing less than total dominion over all of the free world. If he gained possession of all three Boxes of Orden, Rahl would have the ultimate power he so coveted. Through the use of dark magic and sorcery, evil wizards, duplicitous collaborators and legions of soldiers, Rahl stopped at nothing to achieve his goal. But he couldn't stop the Seeker, Richard Cypher, from fulfilling the prophecy, killing Rahl and ending his reign of terror.
Now dead, Rahl serves a new master, the Keeper of the Underworld. And Rahl begins anew, attacking the world of the living and doing the bidding of the Keeper. Rahl won't let a little inconvenience like death stop him from striking back at the Seeker. He owes Richard Cypher. They are brothers, after all.
